Abstract
The goal of this work was to develop a numerical model for peat dust denagrations based on experiments done in a closed 20 dm3 spherical vessel. The gas-particle mixture is described as a continuous two-phase flow. The model includes drying, pyrolysis and combustion of the devolatilized gases and char. Local time dependent average values for the size and other properties of the particles are used. The results from the simulation are physically reasonable and promising. Reasons for the disagreements between the results from simulation and experiments are discussed and suggestions for further experimental research and model development are given. As an application the explosion of dry peal dust in a vented vessel is simulated. The extension of the model to strongly heterogenous mixtures with respect to particle size, moisture content or other properties is suggested and considered reasonable from both the modelling and computational points of view.
