Abstract
The report describes construction principles, structure, applications and documentation of a linear programming model of electric power production. The approach is general, and it may be applied to any power system; here it has been applied to the Finnish generation capacity. The model is a part of a larger linear programming energy model which is being developed by the author at the Technical Research Centre of Finland. For independent use it is documented here as a complete self-contained model. The model is a static, deterministic model without regional subdivision. The year has been divided into subperiods in order to describe demand variations and maintenance allocation within the year. However, this does not make the model genuinely dynamic. The whole emphasis lies on the resource allocation structure as it is represented by the linear programming matrix. In our opinion an approach to construct LP energy and resource flow models should result in a clear, geometric and documented picture of the flows of resources in the real system, of the representation of these flows in the linear programming model, and about the approximations being made. A static point model is always the basic building block in dynamic and multiregion models. Extensions to models which treat certain variables as integers, and to decision-analytical models are also possible.
