Abstract
This paper describes the production planning model of the fertilizer sector at the Kemira Oy Company. The model was tested by using the computer at the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT). A description of the test results is also given with the estimation of the nature, flaws and benefits of experimental research on a ready-made model. By means of the model an analysis was made for the impact of changes in the supply of raw materials, in the plants capacity, as well as in the transport of raw materials and products, on the activities of the fertilizer sector. The results provided a basis for determining eight systemic characteristics of fertilizer production or related industry. The research on the model turned out to be closely connected with the studying of the appropriate host system. While providing information on the host system, the model did not seem suitable for solving more general problems e.g. those on land use or on centralization/decentralization. The model proved flawless and easy-to-use. The research also showed that by improving certain parts the usability of the model could be increased. Nothing new was produced within the research as regards the algorithmic properties of the model. The most significant theoretical research result was the development of a method for solving this kind of research related problem of protecting business secrecies.
