Abstract

<p>Non-affirmative education theory represents a contemporary interpretation of the longstanding European tradition of Bildung and Bildung-related theory of education. This introductory chapter begins with a broad view of non-affirmative theory of education and Bildung, as well as the motives for engaging in such a dialogue. Second, as this way of theorising education and Bildung starts from education as an academic discipline of its own, this introduction describes some of the typical questions raised within the German and Nordic traditions of general education (Allgemeine Pädagogik). Third, this chapter includes a short overview of the volume, describing its structure and the separate chapters.</p>
