Global potential for renewable energy powered desalination in the irrigation sector

Abstract

Irrigated agriculture is reported to provide 45% of the world’s food demand and responsible for 70% of the global freshwater withdrawals (Steduto et al., 2018). Irrigation played a key role in the Green Revolution that  enabled countries to increase crop yield and achieve food security. In fact, the gradual increase in the world’s cropland areas has been driven by irrigated agriculture, while rain-fed agricultural areas have remained the same (Steduto et al., 2018). The concern is that irrigated agriculture relies on a finite water resource upon which the municipal and industrial sectors also rely on.
