Early Childhood Sleep Patterns, Self-Regulation and Later Risk for Psychiatric Disorders: CHILD-SLEEP and Finnbrain Birth Cohort Consortium
Acronym
Sleep, self-regulation and children's mental healt
Description of the granted funding
This consortium studies the significance of sleep in early development of self-regulation and psychiatric disorders and evaluates how various environmental and genetic risk factors moderate such risks. The consortium is based on two birth cohorts comprising 5684 families, the CHILD-SLEEP and Finnbrain. The funding is applied to collect a new follow-up sample at the age 9-10 years and to obtain data from the national health registers. On the basis of these data-sets, we report how different sleep patterns in early childhood are related to psychiatric symptoms in 4-5 and psychiatric disturbances in 9-10 year olds. Moreover, the consortium aims to advance cross-disciplinary collaboration in the two cohorts both on national and international levels, to improve quality of research as well as to improve efficacy and productivity in birth cohort studies. Ultimately the goal is to identify new tools to prevention of children's mental health problems.
