Nanostructured multicompound stimuli-responsive photocatalytically active materials (nSTAR)

Description of the granted funding

Semiconductor oxides such as TiO2 and ZnO are widely used photocatalysts, but they require UV-light for excitation. In this project, multicompound plasmonic and magnetic metal and metal oxide nanostructures and their combinations provide efficient alternatives to both utilize a wider spectrum of sunlight activation via plasmonic resonance and enhanced quantum efficiency via magnetic field activation. The nanoscale properties of the developed multicompound structures are critical for the photocatalytic activity. The main objective of the research is to develop fundamental knowledge on the interaction of light with multicompound plasmonic and magnetic nanostructures, and thereby improve their photocatalytic activity. Such visible light activated nanostructures can, for example, be used for efficient solar hydrogen production, and thus, promote sustainable development. Hence, the proposed research is expected to have a significant impact on both academia and society.
