NoveLyme; From interdisciplinary basic research to novel diagnostics for Lyme borreliosis

Description of the granted funding

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most important tick-transmitted disease globally. The clinical manifestations of LB are the early skin infection at the tick bite site, and various late stage manifestations of the nervous system, joints, skin, and of the heart. The diagnosis of LB is based on typical clinical manifestations of the patient and on laboratory tests. The main approach in LB laboratory testing today is the detection of borrelia specific antibodies in patient serum and cerebrospinal fluid. However, there are many pitfalls in current serology based diagnostics, and thus novel approaches are needed. In the NoveLyme project, our aim is to investigate the basic immunobiology of LB, and to identify novel laboratory biomarkers of LB.
