Seeking improved diagnostics, new therapeutic approaches, and mechanistic understanding of frontotemporal dementia
Description of the granted funding
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is an early-onset neurodegenerative disease, currently lacking disease-modifying therapies, specific biomarkers, and fundamental understanding of disease mechanisms. Synaptic dysfunction may be the earliest pathological change in neurodegenerative disease brain, but this is understudied in FTD. SeekFTD consortium, formed by leading Finnish experts in FTD research, aims to generate novel diagnostic tools and clarifying mechanisms of early synaptic deficits in FTD for accurate early diagnostics and treatment. We examine patient data and samples and induced pluripotent stem cell-derived model systems from a Finnish FTD patient cohort to deliver new insights into disease mechanisms, specific biomarkers and therapeutic targets, and develop clinical and physiological assessment tools to aid early identification and treatment of FTD patients.
