MDynamic-MRI: studying the microdynamics of the brain with multidimensional-MRI
Description of the granted funding
This project will develop imaging tools to measure properties of brain cells and their surroundings that change morphology and composition during brain activity. These dynamic processes or microdynamics reflect how the brain works and can be altered by disease, injury, or aging. My multidisciplinary team will first study how the brain tissue changes during activity using super-resolution microscopy; second, we will develop MDynamic-MRI based on non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on tissue slices; and third, we will implement MDynamic-MRI in vivo in animal and clinical scanners and explore Alzheimer´s disease pathology. With MDynamic-MRI, we will study complex phenomena not observable with conventional MRI, such as how the brain clean waste products during sleep or how activity patterns are altered in brain diseases. This project will be done at the University of Eastern Finland together with Kuopio University Hospital and collaborators from Spain, Portugal, Sweden and US.
