Hemicelluloses as pharmaceutical excipients: properties and mechanisms enabling modified oral drug delivery (HemiPharm)

Description of the granted funding

Hemicelluloses are plant cell wall heteropolysaccharides, that are present in side-streams of wood biomass industries. They have been underutilized for a long time, but lately their use have been investigated in food sciences and biomedical applications. In HemiPharm-project, we want to investigate the previously unexplored possibilities for replacing synthetic polymeric excipients in pharmaceutical or natural product preparations by hemicelluloses for different purposes, i.e. as tablet excipients, as drug solubilizers and stabilizers of amorphous drugs in solid dispersions and in 3D printing of pharmaceutical preparations for oral use. The versatile research will create totally new information on the solid-state properties of hemicelluloses, in vitro and in vivo properties of solid dosage forms containing them and amorphous materials in general. This will open a new research area, create application possibilities for hemicelluloses and promote research on “green pharmaceuticals”
