Education for deliberation: Practices of inquiry in dialogue-based democratic education
Description of the granted funding
The project aims to create a novel approach to democratic education and is motivated by the following presumptions: (i) the most vital model for future democracies involves deliberative elements; (ii) deliberative democracy cannot develop without education; (iii) current theoretical and pedagogical approaches to education for deliberation are gravely deficient. The main research question, how to best promote education for democratic deliberation, is approached from theoretical, empirical and pedagogical perspectives by three subprojects at the Universities of Oulu, Tampere and Turku. The consortium builds its theory development on the interrelated concepts of a habit, inquiry and practice as interpreted in philosophical pragmatism. The project creates a new basis for democratic education by building a coherent theory and research-based practices of deliberation in education.
