The origin of black hole jets – Resolving the jet formation region at millimetre wavelengths

Description of the granted funding

Supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies are some of the most efficient energy sources in the Universe - they can convert energy of the in-falling matter to radiation and to highly collimated, millions of light years long plasma jets. The formation process of these jets remains poorly understood but it is believed that magnetic fields play a significant role in it. During the past two decades there has been rapid progress in computer simulations of jet formation. Accurate observations of the jet formation region - and especially of its magnetic field - are, however, still largely missing, and this makes it difficult to test the models. Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a new, global array of radio telescopes forming an instrument with an unprecedented resolution, which made it possible to take the first image of a black hole. In this project, we will use EHT and other radio telescopes to image the jet formation site and measure its magnetic field structure for the first time.
