Innovative methods for measuring and modelling the dynamic forest road quality

Description of the granted funding

Globally, road transportation accounts for more than 80% of the total long-distance transportation volume of industrial roundwood. The service costs of the gravelled forest road will rise considerably if the maintenance and repair of the road is neglected. The Finnish forest road network is suffering due to various reasons. Maintaining quality information of forest roads, needed for maintenance and repair and describing also forest road trafficability, at country level (at the level of 130 000 km) accurately, up-to-date and cost-effectively requires new, innovative methods for forest road measuring and modelling. We need a dynamic model allowing us to predict the quality of forest roads at a given time period accurately everywhere in our country. We have national leading experts from key areas required in the project as PIs representing the needed technologies: remote sensing and their sensors and processing, road quality and forest operations and logistics.
