Seizure emergencies and status epilepticus - streamlining diagnostics and treatment

Description of the granted funding

Seizure emergencies form a significant patient group in emergency neurology. Prolongation of a seizure to status epilepticus (SE) is life-threatening and the goal of treatment is to stop the seizure without delay. This means correct identification of the situation and optimally targeted treatment without delay. The current situation is far from optimal. The aim of this project is to improve the diagnostics and treatment of patients with seizure emergencies and SE by identifying gaps in the seizure treatment protocols, developing treatment in emergency services and ICU, developing a SE-recognition EEG-algorithm and identifying new etiological factors in super-refractory SE patients. Through this project seizure emergencies are raised to the same level of a seamless and delay-free treatment chain as in acute stroke. The EEG algorithm improves the diagnostics of SE, and these research results will change treatment practices nationally and internationally.
