Abstract

Urbanization is a global phenomenon, and cities play a pivotal role in addressing sustainability challenges. Nordic countries have a rich history of citizen engagement and sustainable urban development. This book explores innovative approaches, best practices, and lessons learned from the Nordics, which can inspire and inform inclusive and collaborative sustainable urban development strategies worldwide. Divided into four parts, it covers project-based urban development, engagement mechanisms, strategies to ensure inclusivity, and finally, as a synthesis, presents the Nordic framework for citizen participation. Individual chapters of this book discuss the use of innovative engagement approaches, identify potential barriers, and address the diverse needs of citizen groups, advocating for a multidisciplinary approach to build resilient, citizen-centred cities. This comprehensive analysis aims to guide policymakers and urban planners in creating more inclusive, sustainable urban environments.
