Abstract
In our article, we give space for young peoples’ complex affects and aim to understand and examine the diversified and messy digital everyday lives of young people in Finland. We ask, what is the role of affects in ninth graders’ digital everyday lives and how do these affective assemblages resonate in their perceptions of digital wellbeing? Affects and emotions are often studied psychologically, but here we approach affects culturally as part of our lived experiences. From this cultural viewpoint, affects address hot spots of societal issues that demand our consideration and actions. Theoretically, the article is anchored in digital affect cultures, affective assemblages, and reverberation, which scrutinize the role of affects in mundane agencies, practices, intensities, and contexts of young people in their digital everyday. Our results stress the importance of studying the messiness of digital practices. We also highlight the need for methodological innovations concerning studying the affects and emotions in a more nuanced way.
