Learning, Aging and Dyslexia (LeADy)

Description of the granted funding

Learning disabilities in elderly are understudied. In this project we will focus on dyslexia, or reading difficulty, how it manifests in older individuals, how it is associated with aging-related cognitive changes and will study in detail these processing using brain research methods. We will utilize a longitudinal sample that has been studied over the past 30 years. In the new data collection phase, we can study, for example, general working memory capacity and how the deficits in verbal working memory with origins in early brain development interact with aging related changes. In a similar manner, we will also study the associations between hearing loss, speech perception, phonological processing, processing speed and rapid naming. The results provide new information on the dyslexia profile in older adults and how learning disabilities should be taken into account at this age for example in different services.
