Description of research

During my research career, I have focused on studying the associations and effects of physical activity on prerequisites of learning and learning outcomes. Especially, I have been interested in the effects of physical activity on cognitive functions, alertness, affective factors and school engagement as well as the factors underlying these effects. In addition, the effects of physically active learning, physically active breaks and other physically active strategies in academic lessons have been in my research focus. During the research projects, I have worked closely with international and national action programs promoting physical activity, learning and well-being (e.g. Finnish On the Move programmes), and offered them information directly applicable to these programs. Additionally, I have worked closely with the teachers and with teacher education to support the development of teachers’ instructions and and thereby students’ learning and well-being.
